Readings

'I have made you a covenant of the people.'

On this feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we think on the good things our own baptism has endowed us with. On being baptised, we enter into a new relationship with God the Father, becoming truly his children. We are filled with the Holy Spirit and enfolded into the Body of Christ, the church. No longer slaves to sin, we die with Christ and are born in Christ with a new and restored humanity; a humanity reclaimed, purified and elevated by Christ.
What a tremendous gift and choice baptism is! Let us remember and renew our baptismal promises as we say a special prayer for those being baptised today. As they are welcomed into a celestial and human family, may we continue to strengthen our familial bonds with our brothers and sisters in Christ, founding our love for each other on Christ and his covenant.
