The shepherds found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.

It was he they had been told to look for, but it is significant they found him with her, his mother. They were together then and for much of his earthly life: they are together now, in heaven. He honoured her and surely wants us to honour her - any good son wants his mother honoured. But she was more than his mother. She was the servant of God, the ‘handmaid of the Lord’.

She was also Jesus’ first disciple, pondering in her heart the events of his birth, his growing up, his missionary life, his death, his resurrection. No doubt, too, after his ascension, she would have helped others see the meaning of his presence among us. Mary, mother of Jesus, help us to come closer to your Son.
