‘Make a straight way for the Lord’ is the theme of today’s readings.

John the Baptist points out the Lamb of God, the Saviour, the Way. He points to the one we need to place first in our lives, the one who must ‘increase’ in our lives in importance, while we decrease in self-importance.

If Jesus is first in our lives, then other life-giving events follow. But if we make material things the god we serve, then we slowly shrivel into sterility - unlike the grain that dies in order to flourish. Our world is filled with such other ‘gods’ - diversions that help us to run from ourselves. God is saying, ‘Bring your weaknesses, your needs, your joys and all else to me; but, you, make a straight way for the Lord.’
