They brought to him all who were sick …

In one of the Eucharistic acclamations we say, ‘By your cross and resurrection you have set us free.’ In today’s gospel, in the first miracle of his public life, Jesus sets Peter’s mother-in-law free from a physical illness. Then he cures many other people and sets free people ‘who were possessed by devils’.

We do not know the exact nature of these ‘possessions’ but we do know that by his cross and resurrection Jesus sets people free from being possessed by sin. In our prayer, we may dwell on the acclamation for today and ask to understand more deeply the freedom won for us.
