‘A prophet is only despised in his own country.’

Last July the federal government appointed an expert panel as their advisors on the issue of asylum seekers. A 13-year-old student wrote a submission to the panel. In addition, she won a public speaking competition on the same controversial topic. The story of the young Jesus speaking in the synagogue and the comments of his listeners reminded me of this young lady’s courage and skill to publicly express her position. I wrote to congratulate her.

Sometimes we fail to respect the statement of a young person who may have more insight or more knowledge or is much more open than some of us ‘senior’ people. The people of Nazareth did not accept Jesus’ words. May we learn to give respect to those persons who are different from us, whether that be in age, culture, faith or background.
