Remember not the sins of my youth.

I have just finished reading Julian Barnes’ The Sense of an Ending and found it quite unsettling. It poses questions about whether we can be defined by the ‘sins of our youth’. We are shaped by our past behaviour, but at what point do we leave it behind and become a mature adult?

The main character in this book has not done this, despite being confronted with the costs of his behaviour many years later. Maybe his cynicism and lack of faith, not just in God but in his fellow humans, is what is holding him back. Forgiveness is so powerful, and to give or receive it requires this faith. God accepts and loves us, despite the times when we don’t get it right. We need to do the same for ourselves and for others.
