The idea of entering a fiery furnace conjures thoughts of horror and extreme pain.

Yet the three young men, under Nebuchad-nezzarís orders, enter the fire calmly, without fear. The intense fire becomes a means of purification, a symbol of their faithfulness and holiness. Through their willingness to die for their faith, these young men are freed.

The fiery furnaces in our lives can be times of unbearable humiliation, fear or oppression, sorrow or stress. Excruciating experiences threaten to destroy us, and escape seems impossible. It takes a supreme effort to focus lovingly on God at these times, but perhaps our pain and fear might be lessened and our spirits soothed by a thankful remembrance of Godís great love. Lord, be my consolation in difficult times.
