Nicodemus came to see Jesus under the cover of darkness.

The Pharisees were roundly condemning Jesus. Nicodemus, one of their number, was unsuccessful in his efforts to defend him: his challenge did not have any effect. In his heart, though, he remained loyal to Jesus. St John tells us that he went to the body of the crucified Lord after the crucifixion—an act not without risk.

Here is someone, then, that I can identify with. You know, Lord, that, all things being equal, I’m eager to follow you, but … So in Nicodemus I find encouragement. Give me the strength, Lord, to live today as one who really is trying to follow the way you lead.
