They prepared a dinner for him there.

We watch with Luke as Mary washes the feet of Jesus and dries them with her hair. The perfume pervades the whole house. Jesus defends her from criticism.

Luke’s story also introduces us to the onlookers, each one set within parentheses: Lazarus (who was raised from the dead); Martha (who served them); Judas (the betrayer); the great crowd (there to see Lazarus risen from the dead) and, finally, the high priests (plotting Jesus’ death and that of Lazarus also).

I, too, am watching this scene, but set within what parentheses?
