Today’s gospel asks us to consider the devas-tation and fear that must have been felt by the followers of Jesus on the days after his death.

Without the benefit of hindsight afforded by the knowledge of the resurrection, the stone rolled away, the empty tomb and a young man in white were not signs of hope to these three women, but confirmation that it was all over and that they must now look to their own safety.

Mark’s gospel is a reminder to all communities that have experienced persecution or serious disruption within their ranks, to keep the faith and remain steadfast in the sure hope of the resurrection.

Let us give thanks for the stability in our own communities and pray that all those in the world who are suffering from persecution may come to know the peace and joy of the Resurrection.
