Seeing is believing.

In today’s readings from Acts and Mark, some strange things happen under the heading ‘seeing is believing’. Peter and John are in hot water before the Sanhedrin. They had been preaching the Resurrection. Invoking the name of Jesus, they had cured a cripple and 5000 people had seen and believed.

The Sanhedrin itself could see the fearlessness of Peter and John in expressing their belief that they had listened to God before acting. They could see that the crippled man was cured and that the people believed and gave glory to God. Finally, they could see and believed it was time to release them.

Mary Magdalene did see and believe in the risen Jesus, as did another two disciples. The eleven apostles didn’t believe until Jesus appeared and reproached them for their failure.

For us today, believing does not depend on seeing.
