They all ate and were satisfied.
So often, when we read the feeding of the five thousand, we focus on the end of the story—the miracle of the loaves and the fishes and the fact that there were twelve baskets of scraps collected. Can we look at it in a different way?
The people had been with Jesus for three days. He had been teaching and healing them all this time. He had been feeding their souls and nurturing them, and then, the final act, he feeds their bodies too. But feeding their souls and healing takes precedence. The vast amount of left-over food could be seen also as a metaphor for the way in which their souls are now overflowing with their new understanding of the goodness of God.
