About Today Readings

Amos 8:4-6, 9-12. No one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God – Psalm 118(119):2, 10, 20, 30, 40, 131. Matthew 9:9-13.

How generous is our response to the Word of God?

All it takes is one word. That is the response that we hear in the Gospel reading today. It aligns with today’s response ‘no one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’. On hearing the call, Matthew just got up and followed Christ. A generous response. A response without delay or hesitation. In Jesus’ day, the reputation of takes collectors was negative. Whose reputation is negative in the world today? Jesus can redeem anyone. But Matthew had to give the response to the calling. Do we give an enthusiastic response when we hear the word of God through those whose reputation is negative? Jesus wants us to get up and follow. To give the generous response that Matthew gave in the Gospel today.
