About Today Readings

Day of penance

Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13, 17-28. Remember the marvels the Lord has done – Psalm 104(105):16-21. Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46.

Live your own life

Joseph’s brothers were jealous of the favouritism of their father toward the younger son. It is difficult to forgive and forget injustices. Being ignored and overlooked eats at your self-worth. There are often memes about women in group settings making a suggestion that is overlooked until a man says the same things five minutes later and is applauded loudly. (Not all men, not all workplaces, but it is a common enough theme to have a basis in truth.) However, harbouring negative emotions damages your relationships with people and with God. There is a line from American writer Max Ehrmann’s 1927 ‘Desiderata’ poem that resonates: ‘If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.’ We pray for God’s help to live our own lives with joy and without resentment.
