About Today Readings

St Joseph the Worker

Acts 9:1-20. Go out to all the world, and tell the Good News – Psalm 116(117). John 6:52-59.

‘Anyone who eats this bread will live forever’

Jesus was uncompromising. In this section on the bread of life, he made it quite clear that this was a possible point of division among his followers. Either they could accept it and continue to follow him, or they couldn’t.

Pope Francis makes unequivocal statements also, that can cause discomfort and dissent. His vision is of a church where the shepherds live among the sheep and have the smell of the sheep on them. This sits uneasily with those who prize clerical status, prestige and power. It confronts those on the career ladder to higher positions of influence. It challenges those who enjoy comfort and more than a touch of luxury.

Jesus, inspire our Church leaders to follow the example of Francis, who as Archbishop of Buenos Aires rode buses, lived simply and often visited the poorest parts of the city.
