About Today Readings

St Therese of the Child Jesus

Baruch 1:15-22. For the glory of your name – Psalm 78(79):5, 8-9. Luke 10:13-16.

Many Australians were disappointed when the pilgrimage of the relics of St. Therese and her parents, Saint Louis and Saint Zelie Martin had to be cancelled last year due to the global pandemic. How appropriate her writing of receiving communion “Ah! I cannot receive Holy Communion as often as I desire, but, Lord, are You not all-powerful? Remain in me as in a tabernacle and never separate Yourself from Your little victim.” By her words, Saint Therese shows us how to be a person not separated from the love of Jesus. Jesus in the Gospel rebukes those who didn’t listen to him or follow him, which is in stark contrast to the life of Saint Therese. She shows us how to be a witness and follow Jesus with her whole life, and her life is echoed in the psalm response: her life was for the glory of God’s name. The challenge in the Gospel: are we willing to live lives that are only for the glory of God’s name?
