‘God loves a cheerful giver.’

Today, the church commemorates St Lawrence, a deacon in Rome. Asked by the Roman commander to hand over the Church’s treasure, he assembled the poor and presented them as the true treasure of the Church. For his audacity he was roasted alive. It was said that his death led to the conversion of many Roman citizens and helped pave the way for the empire to embrace Christianity rather than try to destroy it.

Heroic saints and martyrs are not the only ones who build the Church. All of us can become powerful ambassadors for Christ through the lives we lead. Jesus, help me to be open to the Spirit’s transforming power so that I too may build your kingdom.
