Let the light in

In the Gospel reading from Luke today we are reminded of the reality of evil and the way it can insinuate itself into our lives. This may not be sins of the mortal nature but sins of casual carelessness or disregard, sins of omission rather than commission, the sins of letting things go or not standing up when it matters. Sometimes passivity and inaction allow evil to grow unchecked, subtly creeping into society and into individual hearts. Jesus reminds his audience that a house divided against itself cannot stand. He counsels them that although they may have a change of heart and embrace goodness, they must be vigilant in holding off the temptations to evil, because it can return in strength to overpower. We must be alert to the possibility of evil and always let the light overcome the dark.
