About Today Readings

Deuteronomy 4:32-40. Psalm 76:12-16, 21. Matthew 16:24-28.

I remember the deeds of the Lord — Psalm 76:12-16, 21.

‘What do you have to offer in exchange for your life?’

When we read today’s gospel passage we find that Jesus is focusing on the formation of the twelve disciples and it seems they have more to understand before they can be called disciples of Jesus. Discipleship will mean following Jesus in his way of life. For the disciples it will mean carrying their cross just as Jesus would carry his cross to Calvary.

Jesus used the image of crucifixion because that form of dying was common in his day. Some of them, notably Peter, would be crucified. Followers of Jesus down through the centuries have made their own the expression ‘to carry one’s cross’.

Today, let us renew our ‘yes’ as we carry our cross, our ‘yes’ to our following of Jesus.
