Our Lady of Lourdes. Day of penance
1 Kings 11:29-32, 12:19. I am the Lord, your God: hear my voice – Psalm 80(81):10-15. Mark 7:31-37.
He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak
‘You’re on mute!’ ‘Sorry, I can’t hear you. I’m having audio issues.’ ‘You’re still on mute!’
Perhaps 2020 was the year when we first had a minuscule taste of what it’s like being ‘deaf’ and ‘mute’. It’s upsetting and stressful to be involved in a conversation that you can’t hear and can’t contribute to. Of course, my own limited understanding cannot begin to imagine the experiences of deaf and speech-impaired folk; I’m not trying to draw a comparison here. But the Gospel reading does lead me to think of the times when I have felt unable to hear and unable to speak. Sometimes I get anxious. I withdraw into my own experience and cannot connect with the people around me. It’s times like this I need to remember that Jesus heals.
