About Today Readings

Day of penance

Acts 5:34-42. One thing I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord – Psalm 26(27):1, 4, 13-14. John 6:1-15.

We are agents of abundance and hope

The feeding of the 5000 is one of those stories so amazing that we may actually miss the point. Yes, it is about God multiplying the small amount we offer in our loaves and fishes, but it’s also about the abundance that God provides and the instruction to share this with those who didn’t receive this blessing. After everyone had their fill, Jesus instructs the disciples to ‘gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost’ and what did they do with it all? Like any loving community, they would have shared with their neighbours. We may neglect this aspect of the eucharistic meal (taken, blessed, broken, given – Mark 14:22) and fail to give to those not gathered on the mountain side. Gordon Cosby, the founding pastor of the well-known Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC, insisted that any truly Christian call to transform the world was always to be ‘downwardly mobile’. Our call is to move toward the poor and the marginalised, to places of hunger and scarcity as agents of abundance and hope.
