About Today Readings

Day of penance

Genesis 3:1-8. Happy are those whose sins are forgiven – Psalm 31(32):1-2, 5-7. Mark 7:31-37.

He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak

On reading today’s Gospel, I am struck by the physicality of Jesus’ way of healing; poking his finger into the man’s ears and touching his tongue read in today’s times provoke an abject response. Why does this Gospel make a particular point to mention these gestures, that Jesus makes in order to heal? Jesus tells the deaf and mute man to ‘be opened’. In the Genesis story, the eyes, not the ears or mouth of Adam and Eve are, too, opened. In light of this new knowledge, Adam and Eve hide in shame but the man healed by Jesus goes out into the public, hearing new sounds and speaking openly. Knowledge without understanding is like sight without the ability to interpret, to listen, to interact with what is before you. We need our ears and mouths to be opened by Christ in order to break through the shame of knowing.
