Sent out into the world

In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus is preparing to send the disciples out as Apostles, which in Greek means ‘the sent ones’. Like a coach in the locker room preparing his team of underdogs to take on a stronger opponent, Jesus doesn’t pull any punches or sugar-coat the challenges of travelling the world and bearing witness to high-ranking people. It would require faith, trust and the courage of the Holy Spirit to be like sheep among wolves. At the same time, Jesus encourages them to not worry, because it will be the Holy Spirit speaking through them with the words of God the Father. We too are chosen and called to be sent out into the world as witnesses of Jesus’ love with the shrewdness of snakes and the innocence of doves. How does the Spirit speak through your life?
