About Today Readings

1 Kings 11:29-32, 12:19. I am the Lord, your God: hear my voice – Ps 80(81):10-15. Mark 7:31-37.

Be opened

Jesus speaks the word Ephphatha, ‘Be opened!’ and the deaf hear, the mute speak. This is more than physical healing; it’s a radical invitation to transformation. What does it mean to be opened today? We are called to listen deeply, and not just with our ears but with our hearts. Particularly to those we overlook, misunderstand or fear. For the Church to ‘Be opened!’ we need to open our doors wider, to welcome those on the margins, and to engage courageously with contemporary questions. It invites us to move beyond rigid structures and rediscover the Gospel’s living pulse in dialogue, diversity and discernment. It challenges us to speak truth with compassion, to embrace new ways of thinking, and to be vulnerable enough to change. To be opened is to be alive and open to God’s grace, to others, and to the renewing breath of the Holy Spirit.
