About Today Readings

St Hilary | Day of penance

Hebrews 4:1-5, 11. Do not forget the works of the Lord! – Psalm 77(78):3-4, 6-8. Mark 2:1-12.

God’s rest is a haven in the midst of frenetic activity

We who have believed enter into God’s rest. What is this rest that God offers us? To me, God’s rest is a haven in the midst of whatever frenetic activity is enveloping me. It is an offer of peace, of joy, and an invitation to trust that God’s love holds me, no matter what. Why does the author of Hebrews urge us to make every effort to enter God’s rest? For me, it is because we can so often forget to trust in God and rely on God. We strive to work hard and we rely on our own performance, which limits us to ourselves alone instead of tapping in to God’s resources for us and living out God’s dream for us which is unimaginably better than what we could ever conceive for ourselves. To enter God’s rest is to enter into a greater existence beyond ourselves and to be in full relationship with God who gives us life.
