Day of penance
Hosea 14:2-10. I am the Lord, your God: hear my voice – Ps 80(81):6, 8-11, 14, 17. Mark 12:28-34.
A promise of love and safety
God does not give up on us. We may turn away, take up new idols, forget what we owe God and to each other, but God is always there. He calls to us, promising safety and the richness of love. God heeds our calls, frees us from burdens, saves us in our distress. ‘The ways of the Lord are straight.’ All we need to do is heed God’s voice, to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbour as ourselves. It’s as simple, and as hard, as that.
