St John Chrysostom | Day of penance
1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-27. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God! – Psalm 83(84):3-6, 12. Luke 6:39-42.
Gratitude and openness
You hypocrite! What a call out. The Gospel today is challenging because it’s true. We are all hypocrites, even if only now and then. But this fact is a positive because we must accept that we must treat others how we would like to be treated. Identifying the hypocrisy of others and calling them out is important to correct them but also must be done with love. Empathy and compassion are easy to offer as we have also been hypocrites ourselves. Spend some time contemplating how you would like to be corrected and offer that to others. Consider how when you are called out for hypocrisy you should respond with gratitude and openness. That is how today’s Gospel reading can be embraced and ‘lived’.
