Standing up for those who are disempowered
The elders in today’s reading from Acts seem at a loss as to what to do with the Apostles. They probably thought they’d solved ‘the Jesus problem’ when he died and yet, here are people still working in his name, still being a nuisance. For us, the actions of the Apostles can be a spark to help us think about how we can be a nuisance, speak the uncomfortable truths and stand up for those who feel disempowered. There are those who say that religion and politics shouldn’t mix, but if our faith is about being the best selves we can be, then sometimes that means challenging politicians and those in power, being Jesus’ voice for today’s world.
