About Today Readings

1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord – Psalm 88(89):16-19. Mark 2:1-12.

Jesus is his own authority

In today’s reading from Samuel, the Israelites beg God for a ruler. God’s chosen people pray for someone to protect them. Although God freed them, they prayed for a leader to follow. Even though God has set the Israelites apart, he agrees to provide them with a king. However, God reminds them of what they’ll lose when they get their ruler – their freedom.

In the Gospel reading, we again see the teachers of the law are questioning Jesus and his teachings. They want to know under whose authority, guidance, and rule Jesus acts. But Jesus doesn’t need anyone’s authority to forgive sins, and he is his own authority. And his authority brings true freedom.

Lord, remind me I don’t need the authority of anyone else, king, teacher, boss, or guru. I find authority, healing, and freedom in you.
