About Today Readings

Day of penance

1 Kings 19:9, 11-16. I long to see your face, O Lord – Psalm 26(27):7-9, 13-14. Matthew 5:27-32.

Follow the spirit of the law joyfully and faithfully

Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery in his heart. Jesus makes it clear that he is more interested in the spirit of the law rather than black-letter technical obedience. Our conscience matters to Jesus – whether our intentions are pure of heart, whether our thoughts and desires are consistent with our words and actions, whether we are internally as well as outwardly faithful. Jesus invites us to be loving and faithful in all that we are. But we sometimes fall short. Can we bring those moments before Jesus, and ask Jesus to shine light on where we have stumbled and show us what we need to do to repair any harm caused? May we always strive to follow the spirit of the law joyfully and faithfully to the love that God has called us to be.
