Day of penance
Hebrews 4:1-5, 11. Do not forget the works of the Lord! – Psalm 77(78):3-4, 6-8. Mark 2:1-12.
The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins
I don’t know about you, but forgiving myself can be hard at times. I often find myself thinking about things I’ve done, even many years ago, that I regret doing – people I’ve let down or hurt over the years. My brain has a way of bringing these memories back to me particularly when I’m already feeling weary and down on myself.
Jesus’ words to the Pharisees are challenging in a couple of ways. The first, of course, is the idea that God, through Jesus, can forgive our sins. The second, perhaps even more powerful idea, is that God does indeed forgive us.
Readings like this remind me that there’s no point me carrying the burdens of my past sins with me. I should remember and learn from them, but I have no right to feel worse about myself because of them. If God has forgiven me, what authority do I have to believe that I’m beyond such forgiveness?Email this Print This Page
