We are called to move into the world

Language is a wonderful gift. Anyone who has tried to learn a new language will know both the joys and challenges. For a long time, I imagined that the story of the tower of Babel was a story of punishment. After all, God seems frustrated that humans think they can make a tower that reaches all the way to heaven. God intervenes and muddles up their languages, presumably so they can’t co-operate on their silly project. But this is really a story about God asking us to remember our priorities. We are not called to settle in one place and reinforce our own sense of superiority. On the contrary, we are called to celebrate diversity, especially of language and culture. This means spreading out and bringing God’s love and grace to the whole world, not just one little corner of it. The Gospel tells us to carry our cross, not to sit in just one place with it.
