Understanding God’s love

Whenever we hear of Peter in the Gospel our hearts are at ease. We love Peter because he is so much like us. He has all the failures and fears that we have. Jesus in the Gospel challenges Peter’s commitment and love. I understand that the first and second time Jesus asks Peter ‘Do you love me?’ he uses a form of the word which means total love, complete love, unconditional love: agape. Peter responds both times with the word which means friendly love: phileo. The third time, Jesus uses the word phileo, and Peter responds with that same word for friendly love. In a way, Jesus is asking Peter, and us, if we love him more than we love others? Peter tries so hard to understand Jesus and never fully grasped who he was. We too often struggle to fully grasp God’s love.
