About Today Readings

St Elizabeth of Hungary | Day of penance

Wisdom 13:1-9. The heavens proclaim the glory of God – Psalm 18(19):2-5. Luke 17:26-37.

God is endlessly creative

I wonder what Jesus could have meant when he says, ‘where the body is, there too will the vultures gather?’ Perhaps he is reminding us that there is more to life than just our physical existence. Anybody who has held the hand of someone they loved as they pass from this life to the next knows that something extraordinary happens in that moment. There is surely an experience of grief and loss but also, often enough, a sense that a new phase of life is beginning. We let go of one reality and allow another to embrace us. The Book of Wisdom today describes God as ‘the very author of beauty’ and urges us ‘not to fall victim to appearances’. God is endlessly creative, always making something happen, even with pain. ‘No speech, no word, no voice is heard’. It is an experience beyond words that ripples ‘through the whole earth’.
