About Today Readings

Day of penance.

Joshua 24:1-13. Psalm 135(136):1-3, 16-18, 21-22, 24. Matthew 19:3-12.

His love is everlasting — Psalm 135(136):1-3, 16-18, 21-22, 24.

‘What God has united, nobody should separate.’

The film The King’s Speech poignantly showed how the future King George VI was helped by Lionel Logue to overcome a debilitating speech impediment. How crucial this was to enable him to be a symbol of courage to the British people in their darkest hour. That the King and his wife and children remained in London during the Blitz gave hope and reassurance to the British people. They were one in sharing fear, danger and ultimate victory.

Similarly, married couples who celebrate golden jubilees or who struggle together to support children with disabilities can be symbols of encouragement in our everyday lives.

Jesus, you inspire us with a great ideal of married fidelity. However, you would never intend lives to be blighted by abuse, cruelty or neglect. You read the heart with compassion.
