About Today Readings

St Luke
2 Timothy 4:10-17. Your friends tell the glory of your kingship, Lord – Psalm 144(145):10-13, 17-18. Luke 10:1-9.

Life is precarious but faith is not

St Paul had a special relationship with Timothy. His second letter to him has a fair measure of pain, loneliness and anxiety. Paul never hid from reality. Towards the end of the letter, he says ‘only Luke is with me’. Those words resonate with my experience of Luke’s Gospel. There have been countless occasions on which I am glad that Luke is with me, drawing me into some of the most central stories on my faith journey: the road to Emmaus, the two sons, the good Samaritan, the annunciation, and numerous others. Luke understood that life is precarious but faith is not. God calls us to trust and surrender. The disciples in today’s Gospel are sent out without a purse or haversack, only with each other. At Jesus’ most vulnerable moment in Luke’s Gospel, just as he dies, he says ‘I put myself in your hands’.
