1 Corinthians 15:12-20. Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full – Ps 16(17):1, 6-8, 15. Luke 8:1-3.
We are all God’s disciples
In her work, the Black American painter Laura James frequently depicts the community of disciples as a group of women and men of every race who together follow Jesus. And unlike the evangelist Luke in the Gospel today, who seems to separate out the women – as though the male disciples, too, hadn’t been cured and saved – James’ paintings present them all together, listening, praying and praising God.
What’s your image of God’s disciples? Who sits with the Lord? And who, perhaps without us even realising it, has been set aside or forgotten? Today, perhaps we could spend a few minutes in prayer sitting with the women who followed Jesus, or with some person or group that we don’t tend to imagine as disciples, and see what they might teach us.
