About Today Readings

Day of penance

Acts 9:1-20. Go out to all the world, and tell the Good News – Psalm 116(117). John 6:52-59.

Our spiritual needs

We can certainly sympathise with the Jews in John’s Gospel today, who are incredulous at the prospect of Jesus giving his body to be eaten. What is really shocking here, though, is not the prospect of cannibalism but that God offers himself for us. We are not simply onlookers of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ but are invited to partake of that sacrifice. The flesh and blood are the essence of life. Jesus gives his life in an ongoing offer of life for us who need to be renewed.

This is ‘real food’ and ‘real drink’ that we are offered. Jesus’ claim about this reality says something about who we are. We are not merely physical, though our bodies are important. But we are spiritual too. We have needs beyond the material, and we need to attend to this as much as to physically nourishing food and drink.
