The commandments of love

Life often places dilemmas before us. Some of those dilemmas are personal – e.g. how can I let this person I care about know that they are on a bad path without risking my relationship with them? While some of them are theoretical – e.g. how should society approach this issue which seems to have two opposing, but just as important, interests?

As I get older, I’m more inclined to see that resolving these dilemmas involves considering them as personal rather than theoretical. We can’t answer personal questions through theory, only by engaging directly with an individual with love. Only through prayer and conversation might we discern what God is asking of us.

That, to me, is at the heart of what Jesus is saying in today’s Gospel. If we love God with all our hearts, if we love our neighbour as ourselves, then theory is no longer necessary for we are living in communion with God.
