Jesus’ presence in close relationships

I can’t recall any other stories in the Gospels that feature not one but two blind people. Naturally, we start thinking about the relationship between these two men. They surely had different experiences of life. How did they meet? They cry out together, they reply to Jesus together, they spread the word about Jesus together. They do everything together. There is no competition between them, either before or after they are healed. You get the impression that hardship has created a profound friendship. More than that, their faith has enabled them to keep hoping. Jesus responds to this. He says, ‘according to your faith, let it be done to you’. The reading makes me appreciate those friends who have stayed close even in times of darkness. There are not many of them but there have always been enough. I know that Jesus is especially present in those relationships.
