About Today Readings

Saints Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen

1 John 2:22-28. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God – Ps 97(98):1-4. John 1:19-28.

Keep alive in yourselves what you were taught in the beginning

St John’s words ring true for us at the start of this and every year. How can we recommit ourselves to faith in Jesus Christ, to keep his teachings alive in us? What will make it fresh again? Perhaps this is a chance, if you haven’t done so, to make one or more New Year resolutions. But rather than intentions to do with your physical health, how about thinking about your spiritual health? To keep life flowing in us physically, we need food, water, exercise, relationships, etc. What are the equivalent spiritual life-givers? Maybe we can refresh ourselves with scripture, with good theological or spiritual reading/viewing, with faith-sharing groups, with liturgy and prayer. Then we will be experiencing our eternal life every day of the year.
