Day of penance
Genesis 23:1-4, 19; 24:1-8, 62-67. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good – Ps 105(106):1-5. Matthew 9:9-13.
May we have the faith to follow
Here, towards the end of Abraham’s life we see one of the key reasons why he, despite his many failings, is held up as an example of faith. In a sense, Abraham, having decades before left his family for the land that he was promised, would have been justified in being baffled to have to ask for land in order to bury his wife. Likely he hadn’t expected a rapid rise to political power, but one imagines he would have envisioned owning at least some part of the promised land. Still, faced with this apparent failure, he does not question the God who called him out to this foreign land. Instead, we see him take steps to guard his son from knowledge of the gods of his own youth, lest he be tempted. May we have such faith, to follow without seeing.
