About Today Readings

Guardian Angels

Job 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5. Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way – Ps 138(139):1-3, 7-10, 13-14. Luke 10:13-16.

Heavenly help is near

‘For he commands his angels with regard to you, to guard you wherever you go. With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot against a stone’ (Ps 91:11-12).

On the feast day of the guardian angels, let us remember that heavenly help is always near. Sometimes it can feel like we have evolved beyond believing in ‘guardian angels’. That is something our grandparents or parents would tell us, so that we would not be frightened at bedtime. As adults, we know faith appears to be more complicated than just praying for invisible help from an angelic friend. However, even our Lord speaks of guardian angels: ‘See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father’ (Mt 18:10). We cannot forget that God reveals his mysteries to the childlike and innocent.

May we maintain our childlike faithfulness until the end, whether we appear foolish to others or not.
