The unbreakable new covenant

It is said that a promise is only as good as the one who makes it. The trouble with the covenant made at Mount Sinai was that one of the parties was pretty unreliable. Before the ink, or more appropriately the blood, had dried on the covenant, God’s people were off after the golden calf. Throughout salvation history God’s covenants always had this weakness. Again and again, we abandoned each covenant. Human frailties of various kinds always overcame the Jewish people’s initial fervour.

Of course, this was not the whole story. In the fullness of time, via his chosen people, God supplied a solution. In the incarnation God gave us a true brother, a man like us, who could and did perfectly fulfil the human side of the covenant. Unlike the old, this new Covenant can never wear out, however unfaithful we are, because it does not depend on us.
