About Today Readings

Day of penance

Romans 4:1-8. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation – Psalm 31(32):1-2, 5, 11. Luke 12:1-7.

Lord Jesus have mercy

It is funny how often we see passages of Jesus’ condemnation of religious hypocrisy used as weapons against perceived hypocrites. Frankly, unless we have the omniscience and innocence of Jesus it seems pretty brave to look beyond the mirror when faced by these readings. Jesus doesn’t say that ‘what that church figure, politician, colleague etc. who you don’t like says in the darkness will be heard’ he says ‘you’. So, what do I say and do in the dark? What are my hypocrisies?

Personally, I find it bewildering how often I think like a naughty child in my sin. Much of the time the thought of my sin being known to others and the attendant embarrassment is more distressing to me than what I have done, as if I am content to be a bad man thought well of. Lord Jesus have mercy on me a sinner.
