Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs! – Psalm 48(49):6-10, 17-20
‘The twelve were with him, as well as some women’

Mary, Joanna and Susanna – these women are mentioned by name. They, with other women, accompany the twelve apostles who are ‘proclaiming and bringing the goods news of the kingdom of God’ to the cities and villages. The women, with their sins, ailments or inferior social status, are raised up by Jesus. Cured, forgiven, given purpose and fired by love of Christ and faith in his teaching, they stand alongside Jesus and their male counterparts. They provide for the apostles from their own resources, making the mission to preach the Gospel achievable.

Lord, bless the work and ministry of women in our church and society. Move within us a new spirit of gratitude for your love. Pour out your Holy Spirit on all who seek to know you, whatever be their gender or status. Call us forth, send us out. Be for us a guide for our path.
