About Today Readings

St Pius X

Ezekiel 37:1-14. Give thanks to the Lord, his love is everlasting – Ps 106(107):2-9. Matthew 22:34-40. St Pius X.

With all your heart, your soul and mind

In today’s Gospel passage we have a recurring set up: the Pharisees trying to unsettle or trip up Jesus. They want to see if they can catch him out. Which is the greatest commandment? The question assumes that Jesus is going to have to choose between competing ones. As ever, Jesus moves beyond the zero-sum, winners-and-losers style game they want to play. The greatest, the first commandment, calls us to love of God – ‘with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind’. He then says, ‘The second resembles it’. The second commandment, to love our neighbours as ourselves, and indeed all the other commandments are not separate from but resemble and flow out of our commandment to love God. All creation is God’s gracious gift. How am I called to love in return?
