About Today Readings

Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13. Psalm 18(19):2-5. Matthew 9:9-13.

Their message goes out through all the earth—Psalm 18(19):2-5.

‘He got up and followed him.’

The story of the call of Matthew reveals the ways in which Jesus offered mercy to tax collectors and sinners, to those on the margins of society. Jesus continues to offer us mercy, a mercy which calls us to follow him. As disciples of Jesus, do we follow Jesus to the margins and offer mercy to all we meet? Instead of seeking always to be bringing people to church, do we bring the church to them? Whom do we treat as second-class citizens today? Can we extend the mercy of God to them? May our eyes and hearts be opened to see the need for mercy around us, and may we be the ones to extend that healing mercy.
