Chair of St Peter.
1 Peter 5:1-4. Psalm 22(23). Matthew 16:13-19.
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want – Psalm 22(23).
‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’
Jesus asks the disciples a question that goes to the heart of his identity: ‘who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ They are non-committal, answering in general and exploratory terms: John the Baptist; Elijah; Jeremiah. Jesus goes deeper: ‘but who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter immediately answers Jesus, saying he is ‘the Messiah’ and ‘the Son of the living God’. This witness becomes a call to mission for the other disciples. Will they be able to answer in the same way?
Lord God, we pray that we may be shepherds of your flock. Help us to proclaim you as Messiah and Lord of our lives.
