About Today Readings

Day of penance

Jeremiah 20:10-13. In my distress I called upon the Lord, and he heard my voice – Psalm 17(18):2-7. John 10:31-42.

The Lord is my strength and saviour

Fr Stan Lourduswamy, an Indian Jesuit, was detained 8 October 2020 on spurious terrorist charges. As with Jeremiah and Jesus, he was the target of hostility and a victim of injustice because he advocated for the rights of the poor. He spent 10 months in prison during which time he likely prayed that God be his champion. He died there aged 87. He is now championed himself as a mentor and inspiration for other Christians who stand up for truth and justice. When I am falsely accused of wrongdoing, can I retain my integrity? Can I continue to trust in God’s care for me even if I am punished and shamed? I need to remember that I am among many who have suffered this way.
